FEBRUARY 16, 2010 was the final day for Filipino WWII veterans to apply for one-time benefits created by the 2009 Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation provision of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. As of February 16, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) had approved the applications of 12,846 eligible Filipino WWII veterans; these qualified veterans or their widows have been paid a total of nearly P7.2 billion . LA TRINIDAD, Benguet?Aiming to get a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop the construction of a mall by JARCO realty corporation, Lawyer Greg Abalos filed an injunction case on Friday (Feb 19). Abalos said, we have to restrain both parties from proceeding with provisions of the contract. According to him, there was no transparency and no consultation with the project and that there was a deliberate intention to hide the project from the people of La Trinidad. (continue)

Rowena (not her real name), a 19 year old 4th year nursing student in her sworn affidavit has accused the two doctors after she felt that she was verbally violated within the hospital premises on December 1, 2009. BAGUIO CITY?Despite an estimated loss of P1.6 billion pesos in the government revenues, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has signed into law Republic Act (RA) 9994, or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act on February 16. The act will grant more benefits to senior citizens, it will restore their full 20-percent discount on goods and services previously diminished with the imposition of the expanded value-added tax This move is historic, and a humanitarian act to benefit lolas and lolos, according to Narciso Padilla, president of the Baguio Elderly Association (BEA). BENECO EYES MINI-HYDRO OPERATIONS IN BENGUET BAGUIO CITY- With a perceived poser shortage in the near future, the Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco) is now eyeing the operations of mini-hydro dams to augment the electricity needs of Baguio City and the Province of Benguet. General Manager Gerry Versoza divulged the plans of the electric cooperative during the weekly Kapihan sa Baguio of the Philippine Information Agency. Possible sites for the construction of these mini-hydros in the province are: Bugias town and Tabaan Sur and Norte in the town of Tuba. (continue)

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet?The Ambuklao Dam will now be operational by the end of this year, this according to technical experts from the SN Aboitiz Power Benguet Inc. (SNAP-Benguet Inc.) in an interview with Baguio Chronicle over the week. Engr. Celso Caballeros, deputy project director, Ambuklao and Binga rehabilitation, said the dam will be in full operation of November or December of this year. The dam is located in Bokod, Benguet is currently undergoing rehabilitation and has not been producing any electric power since it was taken over by SNAP-Benguet from the National Power Corporation sometime last year.
